Check your eligibility

As a healthcare professional wanting to work in the UK, you’ll need to secure a visa that’ll allow you to lawfully practice here.

There are different types of visas that you may be eligible for:

Skilled Worker visa

Depending on the candidate and client in question, eligibility for a Skilled Worker visa can vary. At Espirita, we can offer placements to candidates holding this type of visa, however, please bear in mind that we assess this on a case-by-case basis.

You must be able to prove the following to be eligible for a UK ancestry visa:

  • You’re aged 17 or over
  • You’re financially able (without help from any public funds) to support and house yourself, as well as any dependents
  • You can (and plan to) work in the UK

Your ancestry

You must also be able to prove that you have a grandparent born in one of the following circumstances:

  • They were born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  • They were born before 31st March 1922 in what is now Ireland
  • They were born on a ship or aircraft registered in the UK, or that belonged to the UK government

You can also claim ancestry if you or your parent were adopted, or if your parents or grandparents weren’t married. Note that you are unable to claim UK ancestry through step-parents.

Youth Mobility Scheme visa

You can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa if:

  • You want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years
  • You’re either 18-30 or 18-35 years old, depending on where you’re from
  • You have £2,530 in savings
  • You have a certain type of British Nationality, or you’re from certain countries/territories listed in the eligibility requirements

How long does it take?

You can apply for a visa 6 months before you travel, for example if you’re planning to travel on 15th July, the earliest you can apply would be 16th January.

You’ll need to prove your identity and provide your documents as part of your application. If you need an appointment to do this, you may need to allow extra time. When you start your application, you’ll find out if you need one.

Once you’ve applied online and you’ve proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision with three weeks.

How much does it cost?

You’ll need to pay the following:

  • The application fee of £298
  • The healthcare surcharge, which is usually £776 per year

You’ll also need to prove that you have enough personal savings.

How long can you stay?

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa will allow you to live and work in the UK for up to 24 months. As long as your visa is valid, you can enter the UK at any time, leave, and come back.

If you’re from Canada or New Zealand, you’ll be able to extend your visa by one year after the two-year period ends.
