Are you a Canadian nurse dreaming of working in the United States? The process may seem daunting, but with the right information and preparation, it doesn’t have to be.

In this blog, we’ll talk you through everything you need to know:

Can Canadian nurses work in the US?

There is nothing stopping Canadian nurses from making an application to move to the US to work there, however, they need to fulfil certain requirements to be allowed entry. Because nursing in the US is different to nursing in Canada, state boards of nursing must ensure that Canadians are suitable to work in the United States.

Some of the requirements that nurses must meet include:

  • Obtaining licensure from a state board of nursing
  • Getting a job offer
  • Acquiring a work visa

Which states accept a Canadian nursing license?

Canadian nurses moving to the US must obtain a nursing licence for the state they wish to work in. However, some states may have a more streamlined processes for Canadian nurses, especially those who have already passed the NCLEX-RN exam, which is also used in Canada.

In the following states, you’re able to submit an eDAS™ (eDocument Authentication Service) report to prove you have already passed the NCLEX:

  • California
  • Nebraska
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • Oklahoma

Other states may require you to submit your results through a different verification service. It’s essential to research the specific requirements of the state you plan to move to and ensure you meet all necessary criteria.

How does nursing in the US compare to Canada?

Comparing nursing in the US vs Canada reveals the unique challenges and opportunities of both countries. In the US, healthcare funding is privatised, resulting in a strong emphasis on efficiency, thorough documentation and meeting set targets to satisfy demands. Consequently, nurses often experience increased pressure to adhere to these guidelines to support their institutions’ objectives. Because of these factors, nurses in the US tend to earn more compared to Canadian nurses.

On the other hand, in Canada, the government-funded system prioritises patient-centred care with a focus on quality and continuity. However, the national labour shortage has led to longer hours and more shifts for those in the profession, putting pressure on the workforce.

7 steps to working in the US as a Canadian nurse

  • 2. Go through credential evaluation: Get your credentials assessed against the standards set for nurses in the United States.
  • 3. Apply for licensure with a state board of nursing: Research what documentation is required by the state board of nursing, collate the necessary documents and apply for a licence.
  • 4. Take the NCLEX exam: Pass the National Council Licensure Examination, a computerised test to assess the skill and competency of nurses, to get your nursing licence in the US.

Things to consider when moving from Canada to the USA

English language proficiency test

Most Canadians won’t need to take an English proficiency test. However, if you received your nursing education in French in Quebec, you’ll need to take one of the following exams to prove your English skills:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

In Quebec, both French and English are the official languages and some courses are taught in French. Therefore, native English-speaking nurses who studied in French must still prove their language proficiency.

Passport validity

If you’re a Canadian nurse planning to move to the US, it’s essential to have a valid passport. This document is your key to crossing the border and starting your new life in the States. Ensure your passport is up-to-date and won’t expire soon, as you’ll need it for various processes, including applying for visas. Not only does your passport help you to enter the United States, it also acts as a vital form of identification during your stay.

Currently, it takes between 3 to 45 business days to process a Canadian passport. So, make sure that your passport is still in date or apply for a new one in good time before you begin your journey to the United States.
